The natural wonders of South America continue today, as you travel from the Atacama Desert to the Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia. Driving a spectacular cross-border route, you’ll see the landscape slowly change until reaching your first stop in Bolivia, Laguna Hedionda. Here, feel fully immersed in it all from the comfort of your accommodation, staying in a glass dome with panoramic views of the lake and mountains beyond. This evening can be spent at leisure and stargazing if the sky is clear.
Day 7 of your Jewels of the Andes Tour takes you to Uyuni, famous for its salt flats but home to so much more. The drive to Uyuni is scenic, passing small settlements and saline lakes, open plains and occasional wildlife, with sculptured rocky outcrops lining the way. Upon arrival, an unforgettable experience of the Uyuni Salt Flats awaits at your luxury Airstream Camper, perfect for outdoor excursions, intimate moments, and some of the best stargazing in the world. This evening, enjoy alfresco meals and sunset cocktails on the salt flats, courtesy of a private chef.
Among the most iconic – and photo-worthy – travel experiences in South America, the Uyuni Salt Flats is an ethereal landscape like no other, as you’ll see during a full-day exploration on Day 8. This 10,0000 sqm expanse of perfectly flat, mirror-like salt plains – itself the remnants of a dried-up prehistoric lake – must be seen to be believed. The skewed sense of perspective at Uyuni makes for a lot of fun with photos and is naturally beautiful too. There’s more. Having been wowed by the salt plains, further Uyuni excursions include the giant cacti of Incahuasi Island in the middle of the desert, the ancient ruins (and mummies) of Pukara de Ayke, Thunupa Volcano, even biking and hiking trails. This evening, stay at a luxury salt hotel to round off the experience in style.
Having spent another night under the starry skies of Uyuni, you may have chance to visit the so-called Train Cemetery nearby, and one last natural spectacle at Ojos de Agua before your journey to La Paz. Upon arrival, enjoy the rest of the day at leisure and seek out one of the many top restaurants in La Paz this evening.
Among other things, La Paz is known for the dramatic mountainscape that surrounds this characterful city, the backdrop for day 10 of your Jewels of the Andes tour. In the company of an expert local guide, you can visit impressive colonial buildings that house exhibitions and interesting artifacts like the Juan de Vargas Museum, Murillo House, and the Museum of Gold. There’s chance to see the city from above at the Killi Killi Lookout or on a cable car ride, and take a short drive to the Moon Valley for impossibly ornate rock formations that were once a formidable mountain. The main highlight comes at the Pre-Inca archaeological site of Tiwanaku, to witness a lesser-known side of Bolivia’s own beguiling history. This evening, a gastronomic experience to discover Bolivia’s traditional and contemporary cuisine in a renowned La Paz restaurant.
Lake Titicaca has been a sacred place for Peruvians and Bolivians over many centuries. Some say the floating islands of the lake even kept native peoples safe from invading Spanish Conquistadors in the 16th century. It’s also a beautiful location, the highest navigable lake in the world surrounded by hills and dotted with islands. Start the day by travelling to the lakeshore town of Copacapaba, before boarding a luxury hydrofoil boat to explore the waters of the lake itself. You’ll visit the historical Sun and Moon Islands, exploring the Sun Virgin’s Temple “Iñak Uyu” and Sacred Fountain, among other important sites. Finish at Huatajata to see the museum there before overnighting in a locally-run lodge.
On Day 12 of this evocative tour of the Andes, you have chance to explore more of mythical Lake Titicaca on the Peruvian side at Puno. Here, spend your time visiting the floating islands, Puno Cathedral, and the local cafes or street food shacks. The rest of the day and this evening can be spent at leisure in and around your boutique Lake Titicaca hotel.
Having enjoyed the tranquility of Lake Titicaca and surrounding Andean foothills, get ready for a serene train journey from Puno to Cusco and the Sacred Valley. You’ll pass lesser-visited towns and archaeological ruins like Andahuaylillas, Racchi, and Pucara, and stop at picture-perfect viewpoints along the way. The train ride from Puno to Cusco feels like an excursion in itself and is comfortable, too. Upon arrival in Cusco, enjoy the rest of the day at leisure to explore the ancient “Naval of the World”.
Today it’s time to delve deeper into the Sacred Valley and be transported to the age of the Inca, as you discover the superbly preserved archaeological sites of Pisac, Moray, and Ollantaytambo. These magnificent ancient wonders – with their terraces, solid walls and water channels – are worth the trip to Peru alone, so be sure to soak up their majesty at your own pace. Lunch comes courtesy of a local hacienda, known for its freshly farmed produce and sweeping Sacred Valley views while you dine. The perfect setting.
The penultimate stop on this all-encompassing tour of the Andes can only be Machu Picchu, a place that has captured the imagination of countless visitors over the years. Once here, it’s easy to see why. To get to Machu Picchu, travel through the Sacred Valley by rail for one of the most scenic train journeys in South America. Then, enjoy The Lost City on a private guided tour, before free time to explore on your own and take in those fantastic views all the while. Later, return to your boutique Cusco Lodge.
The ancient sites and highlights around Cusco are endless, and it all starts in the city itself. Before departing for Lima, enjoy a tour of Downtown Cusco, the markets, famous Cathedral and hidden alleyways followed by a trip to the sensational archeological sites of Qorikancha Temple (the most important of its kind in the Inca Empire) and imposing Sacsayhuaman Fortress. From here you’ll be taken to the Airport for a flight from Cusco to Lima and either an afternoon at leisure, or time spent enjoying Lima’s dramatic coastal views from the upmarket San Isidro and Miraflores Districts, perhaps visiting the peaceful ruins of Huaca Mateo Salado.
As the Jewels of the Andes draws to a close, time can be spent admiring the treasures of Lima’s Larco Museum before a walking tour around Lima’s Colonial Downtown. Your Atelier concierge will then take you to Lima International Airport in time for your onward flight home, full of priceless memories of Chile, Bolivia, and Peru.
Before travelling north to Atacama, visit Patagonia’s fairytale landscapes in Torres del Paine, one of the greatest and most picturesque areas in South America.
Extend your tour to Ecuador and the Galapagos, home to some of the richest biodiversity on the planet, varied ecosystems and stunning natural wonders, cultural heritage and even Inca ruins!
From Peru, see Colombia’s colonial history through the colorful streets of Cartagena, an atmospheric destination on the country’s Caribbean coast.
